Southeast Asia has plenty of renewable resources and is therefore a great potential hub for biobased chemical and fuel industries. Aiming to promote greater integration between biobased fuels/chemicals R&D and commercialization in Southeast Asia, BioEnergy Society of Singapore (BESS) held its biannual conference on bioenergy and biorefinery on 26-28 Mar 2013 in Singapore to bring together all parties interested in the development of Southeast Asia’s bioenergy and biorenewables capacity.

Scientists from universities and research institutes, policy makers and industrial professionals from 48 organizations and 11 different countries attended this conference. In total, 34 oral presentations and 23 posters were presented at the conference. Six posters were selected for the bes poster awards.

Second Prize:

  • Bioconversion of hemicellulose to xylose, by Mr. LAM Yuen Sean, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, National University of Singapore
  • Xylose-fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain construction through the overexpression of a novel bacterial xylose isomerase, by Mr. PENG Bingyin, School of Life Sciences and Chemical Technology, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore.

Third Prize:

  • Optimization of enzyme production by gamma irradiation mutation of fungal whole-cell solutions  for pre-treatment of lignocellulosic biomass, by Mr.  Christoph OTTENHEIM, Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES), A*star, Singapore
  • Catalytic aqueous phase reforming of glycerol for hydrogen production over Pt-based catalyst supported on carbon nanotubes, by Mr. HE Chao, Residues and Resource Reclamation Centre, Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute, Nanyang Technological University
  • Butanol production from renewable biomass by a novel Clostridia mutant, by Dr. MIAO Huang, School of Applied Science, Temasek Polytechnic, Singapore.
